Forest Family is my first all ambient album. Spanning an hour and 25 minutes with details buried throughout, it took a long time to emerge. It goes pretty deep into the woods, but it's carefree about how it gets there as the terrain continuously shifts.
Forest Family is a little sonic vacation, a catalyst for any practice of introspection, focus and relaxation. That's what it was to me while making it, especially over these last few years.
It began with a studio pivot to hardware and dive into modular synthesis, including experiments with novel input sources - like natural quartz crystal piezos, ionizing radiation from uranium, native copper antennae, and changing resistance from streams, soil and trees. It's a process I'm referring to as geosonification, data sonification of nature and geology. I'll keep exploring this endless road for a darn long time. This is the first project to utilize these techniques.
There are all sorts of other bits and birds in Forest Family as well, like stacks of field recordings, previously forgotten analog tapes, multi-band radio transmission, guitar, flute and various textural memories. There's even an appearance from a wild Bobby West (aka Erothyme) from atop a mountain. Last but greatest, there are the lovely vocals my friend and collaborator Isla Hinck contributed to the final track, Somnum, which closes out the woodland trail on a nice warm and human tone.
Otherworldly illustrator Marty Millar created the foliated visual art to accompany the sounds along the way. To highlight his amazing work, a limited run of 11" x 17" matte Forest Family posters are available for order. These include a bonus ambient track, Nimbus, and are signed and numbered by yours truly.

One of the most stunningly cinematic and deep ambient records in my collection. A true work of passion by my friend Julien with enormous heart and personality, including brilliant videos. Skytree
Very much true to its name, this record journeys across a range of landscapes with the artist as the unifying whole. Perfect for folks that also love Tycho, BoC, Lone and lofi/synthwave. Skytree
